IIHF World Championships
It will be the sixth time on German ice, when the world’s best Ice Hockey nations will crown their champion at the 74th IIHF World Championships. 16 teams will play a total of 56 games from 7 to 23 May 2010. The tournament will start with the Preliminary Round, consisting of 4 groups with 4 teams per group.

Groups and venues
• Group A: Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, Kazakhstan
• Group B: Canada, Switzerland, Latvia, Italy
• Group C: Sweden, Czech Republic, Norway, France
• Group D: Finland, USA, Germany, Denmark

The groups A and D will play in the LANXESS arena in Cologne, the only exception being the opening game between Germany and the USA on 7 May 2010 in the VELTINS arena in Gelsenkirchen. The SAP arena in Mannheim will host the groups B and C.

The tournament
Each team will play against all combatant teams of their respective group (round robin), meaning each team plays three games in the Preliminary Round. The first three teams per group will go on to the Qualification Round, whereas the last team will compete in the Relegation Round.

After the Qualification Round, the first four teams per group will move on to the Quarter Final games, followed by the Semi Final and the Final games.
